App State Hickory testing administration

The App State Hickory testing center administers a variety of tests to meet the needs of our students, faculty, non-App State students, and members of the community.

CLEP

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®) gives you the opportunity to earn college credit for what you already know with qualifying scores on one or more of the 34 CLEP examinations. These exams test your knowledge of introductory college-level subjects. Additional information including Appalachian State University’s qualifying scores and credit requirements can be found here.  

You can register and pay for your CLEP® exam at the College Board CLEP® website, then schedule your exam time by calling the Appalachian Testing Center directly at 828-262-6801.  We administer CLEP® exams Monday through Friday with appointment times determined by seat availability. There is a $15 proctoring fee payable by check, cash or card on the day of the exam. 

Modern States offers FREE online courses that are available to anyone and that teach the content tested on the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams. Learners who complete Modern States courses can also take CLEP exams for FREE. Additional information can be found at the Modern States website

Distance Education Proctored Exams

For students enrolled in an online course, the Hickory Testing Center offers proctoring services at the request of either the instructor or online program coordinator. Students who require this service should notify the course instructor or program coordinator to contact us at testing-hickory@appstate.edu in order to arrange for your proctored exam. Non-ASU students are required to pay a $15 proctoring fee, payable online or by cash or check on the day of the exam.

GRE

The Graduate Records Examination is a standardized, computer-based test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States. We administer this exam year-round on certain weekday mornings. Registration and additional information about the GRE can be found at the ETS GRE General Test information page.

Kryterion

As a Kryterion Authorized testing location, the Hickory Testing Center administers a number of professional cortication and industry credentialing exams. Clients for these exams include, but are not limited to:

  • American Board of Pain Medicine
  • Compliance Services and Assessments
  • Google Cloud
  • Institute of Hazardous Materials Management
  • National Association of Mortgage Brokers
Meazure Learning

Meazure Learning provides testing, development, and delivery services for certification and licensure organizations, corporations, educational institutions, government agencies, and trade and professional associations. We are an approved Meazure Learning testing site and administer a wide variety of their computer-based exams for organizations ranging from EMTs to Certified Professional Medical Coders. National Board Certification (NBPTS)

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has “engaged Pearson Vue to deliver the online assessment of National Board Certification at locations across the United States.”  The Appalachian State University Testing Center is an authorized Pearson VUE Select Testing Center and, therefore, one of the locations at which NBPTS candidates can take their assessments. During specific testing windows candidates can schedule their exam appointments through Pearson VUE.

Pearson VUE Professional Certification and Industry Assessment Exams

As a Pearson VUE Authorized testing location, the Hickory Testing Center administers a number of professional certification and industry credentialing exams including technical assessments. Clients for these exams include, but are not limited to:

Praxis Core and Praxis II

Praxis tests are computer-based tests designed to measure teaching candidates' knowledge and skills prior to program entry, licensing, and certification. Praxis® Core exams are offered on many weekdays at 8:00 a.m. Praxis® Subject Assessments and Principles of Teaching and Learning tests are frequently offered during specific testing windows. Prov

As a Prov testing location, the Hickory Testing Center administers a number of professional certification and industry credentialing exams including technical assessments. Clients for these exams include, but are not limited to:

  • Esthetician Theory Exam
  • Natural Hair Care Specialist Theory Exam
  • Cosmetologist Theory Exam
  • Nail Technician Theory Exam
  • Instructor Theory Exam
TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language

The TOEFL is a computer-based test that measures English-language proficiency in candidates for school admission and immigration purposes. The App State Hickory Testing Center hosts TOEFL exams approximately one day per month. Please refer to the ETS TOEFL website for more information and registration details.
